We Are Doing The Needful To Ensure Justice – FG » Naijaloaded

The Federal Government says it is making efforts to get justice in the case involving Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, stated this on Wednesday in reaction to the judgement of an Oyo State High Court that awarded damages in Igboho’s favour.

“We are doing the needful in terms of looking at the law as it exists, and then working within the context of the law in ensuring that justice is done as far as the contending issues between the parties are concerned,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.

The court had last Friday presided by Justice Ladiran Akintola ordered the Federal Government to pay the sum of N20 billion in damages to Igboho.

This followed the suit file by Igboho’s lawyer, Yomi Alliyu, to challenge the legality of the invasion of his client’s house in Ibadan, and the damage done to his property.

He argued that the action of the security outfit was a violation of Igboho’s fundamental right to peacefully own property and wealth.

FG May Open Fresh Charges Against Sunday Igboho – Malami » Naijaloaded

The Federal Government may file a fresh action against Yoruba secessionist agitator, Sunday Adeyemo (also know as Sunday Igboho), following the judgment of Oyo State High Court which awarded N20 billion in damages in his favour

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in New York that the federal government had the right to appeal the Judgement or file a fresh charge.

The judge, Ladiran Akintola, had awarded the money as “an exemplary and aggravated damages” against the AGF and the State Security Service (SSS), over the invasion of Adeyemo’s home in Ibadan on July 1.

However, Mr Malami said the position of the federal government on the judgment was about “law and jurisdiction”.

“As far as this matter is concerned, which court is it that has the jurisdiction to determine it? And as you rightly know, obedient to court orders and court judgments,” he said.

“But then you have to understand within the context of such obedience that there are associated rights and interests that are vested in the Federal Government.

“Inclusive of rights of appealing against a judgment, inclusive of right to file an application for setting aside the purported judgment and order.

“And indeed, inclusive of the possibility of filling a fresh action if indeed the jurisdiction of the court that was alleged to have indeed handed that judgment is an issue.

“So, we are doing the needful in terms of looking at the law as it exists and then working within the context of the law in ensuring that justice is done as far as the contending issues between the parties are concerned,’’ the minister explained.

Mr Igboho’s counsel, Yomi Alliyu, SAN, had filed a N500 billion fundamental human rights enforcement suit against the AGF, SSS and the Director of the SSS in Oyo State over the invasion of his home in Ibadan on July 1.

Mr Alliyu claimed that his client’s house and cars were damaged, while two occupants of the house were killed by SSS operatives during the incident.

However, counsel to AGF, Abdullah Abubakar, had argued that there was no evidence before the court that the blood seen in the video clip tendered by Mr Alliyu belonged to a human being.

Mr Abubakar also said there was nothing in the video clip that showed that the house that was invaded belonged to Igboho or linked the AGF with the invasion.

Mr Adeyemo is still being held in the Republic of Benin where he was arrested some weeks ago while trying to flee to Germany. (NAN)

FG Will Appeal N20bn Damages Against DSS

Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami has said that the federal government will be appealing the judgment of an Oyo State High Court which awarded N20 billion in damages to Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho.

Justice Ladiran Akintola who delivered the ruling described DSS’ action as “arbitrary aggression and prejudices” against Igboho.

Igboho was awarded the money after his lawyer, Mr Yomi Alliyu (SAN) had filed a N500 billion fundamental human rights enforcement suit against the AGF, DSS and Director of the DSS in Oyo State over the incident.

Ruling on the case, Justice Ladiran Akintola said the DSS exhibited an unprofessional conduct during the invasion and also violated Igboho’s human rights.

Reacting to the ruling, Malami said efforts are already being made to commence the process of appealing the judgment.

“God Will Soon Free Me From Prison”

The freedom fighter assured his supporters from prison in Benin republic, saying that he is not afraid of the Federal Government.

Supporters of embattled Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho have been urged not to give up.

The freedom fighter assured his supporters from prison in Benin republic, saying that he is not afraid of the Federal Government.

He added that he is not afraid to be extradited back to Nigeria.

Igboho, in a leaked conversation posted by BBC Yoruba obtained by The Nation, said that he has accepted his fate with respect to his current travails.

Checks by The Nation revealed that Igboho has spent over one month in detention since he was ‘arrested’ by the operatives of Brigade criminelle (Criminal Brigade) on July 19 in Cotonou.

The 48-year-old agitator, who was first detained at the Brigade économique et financière (BEF), is at Prison Civile de Cotonou — Cotonou Civil Prison.

In the last judgment, the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ordered that Igboho should be kept in custody.

The visibly angry Igboho in the audio conversation said:

“It is because of the situation of things, I am a man, I’m a one-million man, I swear to God. Even when there is no man anywhere, I’m still that strong man to reckon with

“I can be playing dumb with everyone but the day I’ll show my colors, they won’t be able to contain me. The day I changed it for them, I them option that they should either kill me or change the cell that I am, and they did because they I changed it for them and they knew that I meant what I said.

“My journey in life is between me and my God, I have accepted my fate where I’m currently. I’m not afraid of anything again, except my God. Even if taken before the Judge, I’ll tell him I’m not afraid of him except God. He can do anything to me.

“Even if it’s Nigeria they want to take me to, I’m not afraid. At least Nnamdi Kanu is there, we are both fighting for the same cause. If they want to take me back to Nigeria, then no problem.

“I have been winning my cases in Nigeria even (Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar) Malami was forced to appeal some of them.

“It got to a stage he claimed he wasn’t aware of DSS (Department of State Services) attack on my house. He claimed he didn’t send them.

“It wasn’t the power of the Beninese government that made me to be here, it was because God wanted it like that. And I’m sure God will soon release me from prison even if all lawyers say they are not ready to defend me again.

“I’m not afraid of anything or anybody again. If it’s Nigeria, let them take me there. My father was very powerful when he was alive, but he died. He and my mum were very poor. But look at me today, I’m rich.”

Beninese Lawyers Collected Millions But Can’t Save Me From Prison – Sunday Igboho » Naijaloaded

Popular Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho), has lambasted his Beninese lawyers for failing to stop his detention at a prison in Benin Republic

Sunday Igboho revealed that some of the lawyers were paid up to five million million (Naira), expressing disappointment that none of them could stop the judge from detaining him despite their large number in court.

It was reported that this revelation came out after an altercation between the activist and one of his lawyers, Ibrahim David Salami.

Recounting the issue between him and Salami to one of his supporters on phone, Adeyemo explained how he walked out on Salami when he came to see him inside the Benin Republic prison.

According to an audio of the phone conversation between him (Igboho) and the caller, the activist narrated that Lawyer Salami had kept him waiting and he eventually walked out on him.

“Lawyer Salami came to prison to see me, but he kept me waiting, attending to some other people for more than 15 minutes. I called on him, ‘Lawyer, I’m waiting, I’m hungry. I want to go and eat.’

“But he replied me saying, ‘will you be going then’ and and I walked away’. I don’t lie. He was here to see me, not someone else. He should have told those ones that he wanted to see his client. I am not a kid. I will be 50 in October,” Sunday Igboho said angrily.

While the caller tried to persuade Sunday Igboho to make peace with his lawyers because freedom is better than being in captivity, he retorted that:

“If lawyers don’t want to represent me in court anymore, no problem. It is God who knows how I got here. He will set me free. Are those lawyers God? Lawyers that could not tell the judge not to take me to prison, despite how many they were.

They were up to 10. In their presence, the judge ordered my detention in prison. Are those ones lawyers? Those who could not remove handcuffs from my hands until Falola came to do so. Are they lawyers? And they collected huge amount of money. Five million, four million, three million (Naira), that was how they were paid; yet they couldn’t remove handcuffs from my hands. I don’t fear any lawyer or anybody. Anything they want to do to me, I’m ready.

“I don’t need any information from Salami. Anything they want to do, they should go ahead. If he is on phone, he should hear me. I don’t need any information from anyone. I need information from God. I told my wife the last time she came here that I don’t need any information from anyone. The information that nobody has been able to get to secure my release from here, God should give me.”

Igboho was arrested at a Cotonou airport on his way to Germany on June 20, three weeks after the invasion of his house by the DSS.

He has since been detained in a Beninese prison indefinitely for allegedly committing a crime in the French-speaking country.
